Whether your perfect laundry scent is fruity, floral, fresh, or reminiscent of a day at the spa, scent layering lets you create a laundry routine that feels a little more personal.
With scented Laundry Soda, plastic-free Laundry Cubes, Scented Wool Dryerballs, and Wrinkle-B-Gone, Nellie’s gives you plenty of ways to find your signature laundry scent.
Here’s how to layer them without making your clothes smell like they walked through a fragrance aisle.
What Is Laundry Scent Layering?
Laundry scent layering means using complementary scented products throughout your wash, dry, and finishing routine.
Instead of relying on one strongly scented detergent, you can build a lighter fragrance in stages:
- Start with a scented detergent in the wash.
- Add a subtle complementary scent in the dryer.
- Finish or refresh fabrics with a light fabric spray.
The goal isn’t to use every scent at once. It’s to choose products that work well together and create a fresh, balanced result.
Think less “everything everywhere all at once” and more “this person has their laundry life together.”
Step One: Choose Your Wash-Day Scent
The wash is where your laundry scent story begins. Choose either scented Laundry Soda or scented Laundry Cubes as your base.
Scented Laundry Soda
Nellie’s highly concentrated Laundry Soda is available in fruity scents like Mango and Coconut, as well as a relaxing Lavender, perfect for cozy bedsheets!
Use one tablespoon of Laundry Soda for each regular-sized load and wash according to the garment-care instructions.
Scented Laundry Cubes
For a pre-measured option, Nellie’s plastic-free Laundry Cubes make scented laundry as simple as dropping a cube into the drum.
Choose from:
- Fresh Linen for that classic just-washed scent
- Lavender for a soft, calming laundry routine
- Spa Day for a clean, relaxing fragrance with a little “ahhh” built in
Place one cube directly inside the washing-machine drum, add your laundry on top, and start the cycle. No pouring, scooping, or accidentally adding detergent for six loads instead of one.
Step Two: Add a Hint of Scent in the Dryer
Once the wash cycle is complete, carry your scent into the dryer with a Scented Wool Dryerball.
Nellie’s Scented Wool Dryerballs are infused with pure essential oils and available in Bergamot, Lemongrass, Lavender, and Rose. They add a light scent while helping lift and separate fabrics, reduce static, and shorten drying time.
Toss one Scented Wool Dryerball into the dryer with four Lamby Wool Dryerballs. One scented ball lasts for approximately 50 drying loads.
The scent should complement your detergent, not compete with it. If you’ve chosen a noticeably scented wash product, one Scented Dryerball is plenty.
Step Three: Finish With Wrinkle-B-Gone
The final layer comes after your laundry is dry.
Wrinkle-B-Gone is a plant-based fabric spray that helps relax wrinkles and static while refreshing clothes, bedding, and other fabrics.
Choose Fresh Linen to continue that crisp, clean-laundry scent or Lemongrass for a bright, refreshing finish.
Simply shake the bottle, lightly mist the fabric, smooth it with your hands, give it a quick snap, and allow approximately five minutes to dry.
It’s the perfect finishing touch when your clothes need smoothing or when something has been sitting in the closet long enough to forget what fresh air feels like.
Travel sizes are also available, so your laundry scent can come along for the trip.
